Huchuy Picchu Mountain in Machu Picchu

Huchuy Picchu Mountain is the new attraction in Machu Picchu Inca City. It is a summit located next to the famous Huayna Picchu Mountain. Its height reaches 2,497 meters above sea level. To get there, you must do a hiking route of only about 1 hour. At its top there are scenic views of the archaeological site. The entrance is with the purchase of the ticket ‘Machupicchu + Huchuy Picchu mt’.

What is Huchuy Picchu?

Huchuy Picchu is the smallest mountain located within the archaeological site of Machu Picchu in Cusco, Peru. Its name, translated from the Quechua language, means ‘Little Mountain’.

Like the Huayna Picchu mountain, the Incas built stone steps to reach the top of Huchuy Picchu. Today is a hiking route (approximately 1 hour) is one of the new adventure attractions in the visit to Machupicchu. From its top you have panoramic views of the entire place.

To visit this mountain it is necessary to buy the ticket ‘Machupicchu + Huchuy Picchu’. This ticket allows you to enter both the Inca city and the mountain.

Where is it located?

The Huchuy Picchu mountain is located north of the Inca citadel of Machupicchu, next to the famous Huayna Picchu mountain. Its summit reaches 2,497 meters above sea level.

How to get there?
The entrance door to Huchuy Picchu is inside Machu Picchu, in the Sacred Rock sector. Access is the same as the Huayna Picchu mountain.

To get to the Huchuy Picchu mountain, you must do a hiking route of only 1 kilometer. These stone roads were built by the Incas. A detour leads to Huchuy Picchu. The main path continues to the top of Huayna Picchu.

From the top of Huchuy Picchu there are panoramic views of the entire archaeological site of Machu Picchu: the Sacred Rock, the Intihuatana, the Main Square and more.

To get more panoramic views, it is recommended to reach the peaks of the Huayna Picchu or Machupicchu mountains.

The hiking route
The hiking route to Huchuy Picchu is of a simple difficulty. In total, it only travels 1 kilometer. However, this distance is ascending through dozens of stone steps made by the Incas more than 400 years ago.

The walk is suitable for people of all ages. The roads are not dangerous. It is also recommended to pay attention to each step. The return path is the same route as the outbound path.

Flora and fauna of the place
The characteristic flora of the mountain is made up of plants, flowers and trees such as cedar, queñuals, ferns, molles and, above all, orchids. It is estimated that in Machu Picchu there are more than 200 species of this beautiful and colorful flower.

Along the way it is possible to see a great diversity of butterflies and birds. One of the most striking (and difficult to observe) is the cock of the rocks, recognized as the national bird of Peru. The most famous mammal species are: the spectacled bear, the Andean deer and the llamas. The latter can be seen in the Inca city of Machu Picchu.

When buying your ticket you must choose one of these nine entry times:

First schedule:

  • The entrance to Machupicchu is from 6 am.
  • The entrance to the Huchuypicchu mountain is between 6 am and 7 am.

Second schedule:

  • The entrance to Machupicchu is from 7 am.
  • The entrance to the Huchuypicchu mountain is between 7 am and 8 am.

Third schedule:

  • The entrance to Machupicchu is from 8 am.
  • The entrance to the Huchuypicchu mountain is between 8 am and 9 am.

Fourth schedule:

  • The entrance to Machupicchu is from 9 am.
  • The entrance to the Huchuypicchu mountain is between 9 am and 10 am.

Fifth schedule:

  • The entrance to Machupicchu is from 10 am.
  • The entrance to the Huchuypicchu mountain is between 10 am and 11 am.

Sixth schedule:

  • The entrance to Machupicchu is from 11 am.

Seventh schedule:

  • The entrance to Machupicchu is from 12 pm.

  • The entrance to the Huchuypicchu mountain is between 1 pm and 2 pm.

Ninth schedule:

The entrance to Machupicchu is from 2 pm.
The entrance to the Huchuypicchu mountain is between 2 pm and 3 pm.

In Machu Picchu there are other adventurous options to choose from. Definitely the most popular is the Huayna Picchu mountain. The top of this summit offers spectacular views of the Inca city and everything that surrounds it. In addition, the walk there is a challenge that is worth it. The ticket ‘Machupicchu with Huaynapicchu’ must be purchased in advance of 3 or 4 months. The demand is high and the supply is low.

The entry ‘Machu Picchu with Huchuy Picchu’ does not allow you to re-enter Machu Picchu. After making the trek to the mountain, the ticket allows you to go through the ‘circuit 4’ within Machupicchu. This circuit allows you to appreciate constructions such as: the Sacred Rock, the Temple of the Condor, the Temple of the Sun, the Water Mirrors, the Temple of the 3 Windows and more.

The ticket can be purchased at the authorized offices of the city of Cusco. However, the most advisable thing is to acquire it online through the official website of Machu Picchu. The purchase must be made a few weeks in advance. Availability is limited.
